The build-out of our Centennial Project was the highlight of my Rotary year. It was unbelievable the support and effect of our three Rotary clubs and the community to complete our project. When we arrived on the scene on May 31, there was nothing but a pike of lumber and supplies and when we finished there was an outstanding playground for the kids. This has been one of those projects, whether you are a Rotarian or not, that makes you feel good to have been part of. This project has given us a chance to get acquainted with members of the other Rotary clubs and should encourage more inter-club events and projects. I also think the community has acquired a better understanding of Rotary and will hopefully attract many new members. I want to thank our club members for taking part in this project and would like to mention that some of our members were group leaders and spent a lot of time on the project --- Richard Brown, Len Dalberg, John Rasmussen, Richard Smullen, and Ed Andrisek. Paul Matthies was also there everyday taking pictures. Dr. Frank Pedersen was at Rotary this Wednesday. We rejoice that his health is improving. He loves to have visitors. Stop in sometime at the Recovery Residence at Solvang Lutheran Home and cheer him on. Two new members will be joining our club next week, June 15. Jerry Foxwell, who is being sponsored by Doc France and is the S.Y.V. Airport Authority Director, and Dr. Louis Busony, who is being sponsored by our own President Nelson Owens and whose classification will be Retired Doctor. On May 31, I gave the invocation at the groundbreaking for our Centennial Children's Playground project. I quoted Nehamiah, who 3200 years ago spoke to the returning refugees from Babylon at the groundbreaking for re-building the walls of Jerusalem. He exclaimed, "Let Us Rise Up and Build!" And re-build they did and so did we Rotarians and community. We did "Rise Up and Build!" It was most exciting! It was indeed a "barn-raising" event! It brought back the day when neighbors would gather and re-build a barn that had been destroyed by fire or storm. I want to thank all of you who participated. I cannot name names because the list would be so large and I'd run the risk of leaving a name off the list. Thanks so very much! I personally am so grateful for your response. When the parking lot is finished and all inspections have been made, there will be a grand opening and dedication. Hope all of you can be there. Sincerely, Len Dalberg Chairman of the Centennial Committee We are always looking for articles about our members and all the Rotary activity that occurs in the Valley. Please contact Len Dalberg or myself.
