King Richard Says

We had our first full club presentation of the Valley Centennial project at the meeting on the 21st. It is really a major undertaking but Len Dalberg, the General Chairman is and will do a great job, and what a job! The Committee of all three clubs has met several times and will continue every two weeks. Anyone with questions or input should contact either Len or me. Soon, all the positions will be filled and we will be off and running. The Design session, with representatives from the company, Leathers and Associates from New York, will be here to start us off on March 9th.

We will be inducting two new members in the next two weeks which will bring us to a membership higher than the club has ever been. Also, the Award Chairs will be finalizing their accomplishments in the next few weeks. We expect to meet all our goals this year. Congratulations !

Community Service Report
by
Marlene Demery

Our Club has already accomplished one of the main tenants of Rotary in "Service Above Self", through our increase in Community Service Projects this year. In addition to our long tradition of providing small grants to many of the wonderful non-profits in the Santa Ynez Valley, we took on two new projects this year in order to be able to submit Award Applications on behalf of the Club. Shortly before the winter rains were scheduled to hit (and then we were dry for 6 weeks after!), we provided the funding for purchase of the materials to re-roof the Solvang Senior Center. This has been particularly important to them this year as the organization has struggled to receive their normal funding for food and programming. We could have not stepped in at a better time, said Willie Campbell!

Stay tuned to the new Cogwheel and a future meeting as the second of our big Community Service Projects is being scheduled for February or March. In conjunction with the Horticulture Class at Santa Ynez High School, we will have a "Planting Party". Working with a student design of Native plants, we will "dig" with them at the Solvang Entrance Sign area at Alamo Pintado Road and Mission Drive and create a beautiful entrance with beautiful, unique landscaping. Come find out how "cool" teenagers actually are!

Centennial Update

Len Dalberg and King Richard introduced our Centennial Project on Jan 21. It involves Planning and building a children's playground at the triangle on Alamo Pintado. Len and Richard made it clear that it is a large project involving Rotarians and the community.

Len and Anabelle presented a check for $100.00 for the Centennial Fund. Members are invited to also give a similar gift to the Fund. For tax purposes, make the check payable to The S.Y.V. Rotary Foundation.

Name The Park

The new park at the triangle on Alamo Pintado also needs a name. Two suggestions have been made. Since it is already referred to as the triangle, name it Triangle Park. Another suggestion is to name it Centennial Park in honor of: Old Mission's Bicentennial in 2004, Rotary's centennial in 2005, and Solvang's centennial in 2010.

If you have a name to suggest, call Kristen Thomsen at 688-7529.

Rotarians Send Aid To Bam Iran

One hundred shelter boxes have been sent to Iran by Rotary INTERNATIONAL. A shelter box is a survival kit that includes a tent, sleeping bags, water purifying tablets, candles, rope, shovel , windup flashlights, cooking pans, and other essential tools and equipment. Shelter boxes will provide a temporary roof for the homeless families in addition to furnishing the basics to help them start their lives over after the devastating earthquake.

Articles for the Cogwheel

We are still looking for articles about our members and all the Rotary activity that occurs in the Valley. Please contact Len Dalberg or myself.
